Effectiveness of constructed farm wetlands in attenuating faecal indicator fluxes to watercourses from yard runoff on livestock farms

چکیده
Constructed farms wetlands (CFWs) are increasingly being used to treat faecally contaminated ‘dirty waters’ from yard areas on livestock farms. The findings of the present study, undertaken at Pwllpeiran experimental CFW, West Wales, provide empirical data effectiveness CFWs in attenuating faecal indicator organism (FIO) concentrations and fluxes receiving waters which they discharge; insight into extent attenuation rates affected by retention times within CFW seasonal factors. Based maximum flows that a is designed treat, an equation developed enable estimates be made size wetland required achieve desired level FIO attenuation. Other aspects design optimise considered, including construction frequent baffles (transverse ridges), leaving parts cells unvegetated incorporating initial settling pond.

Mitigation of chlorpyrifos runoff using constructed wetlands.
Constructed wetlands have been proposed as a potential best management practice (BMP) to mitigate effects of pesticide-associated agricultural runoff. Wetland mesocosms (14 m x 59-73 m) were amended with chlorpyrifos to simulate a storm runoff event at concentrations of 73, 147 and 733 microg/l. Water, sediment and plant samples collected weekly for 12 weeks indicated that chlorpyrifos rapidly ...

Constructed wetlands are increasingly used for water pollution treatment but may also be sources of the greenhouse gas CH(4). The effect of addition of two potential inhibitors of methanogenesis - iron ochre and gypsum - on net CH(4) emissions was investigated in a constructed wetland treating farm runoff in Scotland, UK. CH(4) fluxes from three 15-m(2) wetland plots were measured between Janua...
متن کاملConstructed Wetlands : Treatment of Concentrated Storm Water Runoff ( Part A )
The aim of this research was to assess the treatment efficiencies for gully pot liquor of experimental vertical-flow constructed wetland filters containing Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. (common reed) and filter media of different adsorption capacities. Six out of 12 filters received inflow water spiked with metals. For 2 years, hydrated nickel and copper nitrate were added to siev...
متن کاملTreatment of Log Yard Runoff Impacted by Aged Logs in a Free Water Surface Constructed Wetland
Hurricanes pose a great risk to forestry, and lead to high financial losses due to destroyed wood. For example, the hurricane ‘‘Gudrun’’ devastated a large part of the forests of southern Sweden in January 2005. Windthrown logs are removed from forest, temporarily stored on log yards, and frequently sprinkled with water to avoid decay. However, the subsequent runoff may cause environmental poll...
متن کاملApplication and Performance of Constructed Wetlands for Runoff from Small Open Lots
Vegetative systems have long been studied and evaluated as alternatives to conventional storage, treatment, and land application systems. This paper discusses the application of vegetative systems, primarily constructed wetlands, as a runoff treatment technology for small livestock operations. The approach used for two small dairies and one beef cattle feedlot is discussed. Cost data for these ...
